No Movement On LNG Proposals:
By Kendea Jones -
Nassau, Bahamas:

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham indicated Sunday that his government had not made any decisions on proposed liquefied natural gas [LNG] projects for The Bahamas.

"I have had no discussions whatsoever with any of the LNG persons or projects or companies," he said during a ‘Meet the Press’ conference at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel.

"One of them has written a letter to my office. I am aware that they have had some contact with agencies of the government and I expect that the other one that hasn’t yet made contact will do so based on what I am told.

"We will look at the situation and make some judgments, but it was not a matter when we came to office that we gave very high priority to."

Three companies submitted their proposals under the former Ingraham administration, which had granted approvals in principle for the projects. The companies that submitted proposals included El Paso, AES Corporation and Tractebel (which changed its name to Suez).

After waiting years for approval from The Bahamas government, Suez said it was focusing attention on a project in Florida because it was taking the government too long to give an answer.

But a company official told the Bahama Journal in an earlier interview that Suez’s Bahamas proposal was not completely off the table.

AES proposes a project at Ocean Cay, near Bimini.

The ancillary facilities would include an optional Liquefied Petroleum Gas removal plant, a seawater desalination plant, as well as Ocean Cay employee housing and associated facilities on South Bimini, and an undersea natural gas supply pipeline to the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary.

The Ocean Cay pipeline would interconnect at the EEZ boundary with an undersea natural gas pipeline extending to delivery points in Broward County, Florida.

Aaron Samson, an official of AES, had said he met with Minister of State for Public Utilities Phenton Neymour and was confident that plans would move ahead once the new administration got "settled".
