PM Tells Public Remove Demand For Illegal Labour:
By Kendea Jones -
Nassau, Bahamas:

While noting that illegal immigration is a vexing problem in The Bahamas, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said recently that Bahamians could help to curb the problem by not giving immigrants jobs.

"What society can do for us is to not engage the service of immigrants. Remove the demand and that would help us considerably," he said.

"They are here because there are jobs. If they didn’t have jobs they wouldn’t be here."

Mr. Ingraham, who was speaking at a "Meet the Press" event on Sunday at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, said the government is doing all it possibly can to address illegal immigration.

"We are systemically apprehending and repatriating large numbers of illegal immigrants," he said. "We are also intercepting at sea and we are giving major focus to equipment [for] the Defence Force."

The prime minister said he expects the government will spend "tens of millions of dollars" to upgrade the equipment of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

"We are placing an order for two aircraft for them…We have a satellite facility in Inaqua and there is going to be a new one in Grand Bahama," Mr. Ingraham said.

He also said that the Defence Force is planning to recruit 100 more officers this year.

"The first 50 or so have already been recruited and the next 50 will be put in soon," Mr. Ingraham said.

He added that ensuring the stability of Haiti also presents a problem for The Bahamas. However, he said the government is dealing with illegal immigrants that are here.

"We are regularizing the status of those who have been here a long time and those who were born in The Bahamas have some entitlements and to that extent we have to upgrade the facilities at the detention centre," he said. "But to that extent I think that we are doing all that we are expected to do."

Last year, the government spent more than $1 million repatriating immigrants. Over 6,000 immigrants were repatriated last year, according to officials. Of that number, more than 5,000 persons were Haitian nationals.
