Ministry planning to tackle school violence:
By BIANCA SYMONETTE, Guardian Staff Reporter -
Nassau, Bahamas:

The Ministry of Education is preparing to unveil a comprehensive plan to address the growing problem of school violence, in light of recent altercations at a junior and senior high school in New Providence.

Though opting not to disclose any detailed information about the plan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Elma Garraway, explained that once the information collected by ministry officials, and the resulting solutions to the problem leads to actual policy, the ministry would reveal its plans in full detail.

"We have our solutions and when they are all consolidated, and we have a policy agreement as to where we are to go, we will announce it," Garraway said. We are currently dealing with children with behavioral disorders. There are matters within the communities that must be addressed on a broader level, but as it relates to behavioral problems in schools, we do have a comprehensive plan to address them."

On Friday a student from Government High School was stabbed following a brawl that occurred on campus.

Reportedly, a fight had broke out on the school's campus during an event on Friday afternoon. The midday brawl then spilled over into the neighboring Yellow Elder community. According to witnesses, the situation became so violent that police had to be called in.

That latest episode of school violence came just one day after a brawl took place at D.W. Davis Junior High School on Wilton Street.

That incident left several students nursing wounds and an entire campus in an uproar. Gang activity was reported to be the contributing factor in that brawl.

Last Friday, administrators and union officials met with the teachers for most of the day to discusses solutions to the problem. A draft of suggestions was expected to be given to the ministry yesterday. Classes at D.W. Davis resumed yesterday.

President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers Ida Poitier-Turnquest said she met with administrators at Government High School on Monday, and was assured that everything was back to normal at the school. She also planned to meet with the school's teachers, to hear any safety concerns they may have.

The union president reiterated that parents must play a more pivotal role in their children's lives, so that there could be a reduction in the number of violent incidents.

School violence has been a much-discussed topic in the media over the past year. There has been several pleas made by teachers to reinstate police officers at public schools; however, this seems not to be an option that the Ministry supports at this time.
