Cuba warns WTO of threats to world food security

Geneva.— CUBA warned Friday that the food security of developing countries is endangered for a variety of reasons, among them the rising cost of fuel.

Jorge Ferrer, minister counselor of Cuba’s permanent mission in Geneva, told the World Trade Organization that the spiraling cost of food is threatening world stability, reported PL.

During a meeting of the Trade Negotiations Committee known as the Doha round, Ferrer emphasized that the WTO’s agriculture negotiations, which in practice reduce food aid and export credits, are also issues which must be taken into account.

Obviously, the economic, political and social stability of an important group of underdeveloped countries cannot be put at risk solely as a result of trade considerations, he emphasized.

The diplomat reiterated the commitment to tariff cuts made at the close of the Doha round, but said it should not be at any price. Cuba is committed to the completion of the process, not as an end in itself but rather with results that meet the round’s mandate, which is development, he added.

Developing countries will be the ones to lose if the round fails, but that does not mean that the decisions must be accepted at any cost, he said.

Given a series of internal maneuvers within the WTO itself, he concluded that what is taking place within the organization is a monologue, or a dialogue among the deaf, in which what a few say is taken into account as opposed to what others or the majority of members have to say.
