You must be perfect:
By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter -
Nassau, Bahamas:

You should not get angry. You should always be patient and always unassertive. You should not dance nor attend parties or drink.

You should not do any of these things because you're a Christian!

Stop — let's back up a minute.

These are not any of God's Commandments, but rather some of the rules that the world has placed upon the Christian population, because they profess belief in God, and is something many believers struggle to overcome as they too are human — just like non-Christians.

"I like to call this the Christian fight [because] Christians have always been held to unrealistic values," says Danielle Curry, 42, a believer who attends Faith Temple International Ministries, Madeira Street, Palmdale.

"The world has its idea of what a Christian should be and so does God, but the difference is that God understands that we are human and that we are not prefect, while society doesn't.

"I understand that we must all be held accountable for our actions, but who can honestly say that I am not supposed to get angry? That I can't go to a party or that I can't become impatient? That's ridiculous! I am human after all."

Reverend Ulric Smith of Zion Baptist Church, East and Shirley Streets, says that everyone must remember that no matter who you are, you cannot be or become prefect, but you can strive for perfection.

"It's normal for people to hold Christians to such high standards. I think that because we profess Christianity there are certain expectations of how a Christian should be and that's because of our own declaration and the fact that we are called to be Christ-like," said Smith.

"On the other hand I think that persons fail to realize that because we are striving towards being more Christ-like does not mean that we are Christ. Therefore persons have high expectations but sometimes — not in all cases — those expectations are unrealistic or unreasonable."

Smith says Christians are expected to maintain high morals, but in reality, it is not always the case.

"To be on point all day every day you would have to be perfect, and the fact is that in some cases we're far from perfect. Becoming a Christian doesn't make you prefect." He says Christians will still feel fear, anger, or any of the other feelings.

But he says being a Christian puts people in a position to strive for perfection. And when someone is striving for perfection, Smith says you will obviously see some signs of imperfection.

Explaining the difference between a Christian and a non-Christian, Smith said that Christians people may fall short of perfection and fall into sin, but Christians do not practice sin.

"Because we are Christian, the Holy Spirit is in us and therefore the Holy Spirit is the one who will bring us to a point of conviction. Therefore no Christian can practice sin or live in sin. If you can tell me that you practice or live in sin then you are not a Christian, because no Christian can be comfortable in sin. The Holy Spirit will always help you to understand when you are in error."

Pastor Erika Moxey of Bahamas Harvest Church says sometimes you need people to point out flaws which are a reality, and which everyone must face.

"I think it is simply a tradition to judge Christians," she says. "For years people have been judging Christians — judging how they speak, what they wear and what they do — but no one is perfect and people must understand that. The continuing job of a Christian is to continually work on themselves to become perfect and that's a life-long battle."

She says when the continually working Christians die Jesus will not knock them for every sin, because even the best pastor sins. "He will judge you on how hard you worked on yourself and to stop yourself and others from sinning. Not how prefect you are," says Moxey.
