NASSAU, The Bahamas---The Office of the Attorney General Monday (July 24) launched “The Bahamas Laws Online” website to allow members of the public to access them using the Internet.

The launch, attended by Attorney General the Hon Allyson Maynard-Gibson, and Sen. the Hon. James H. Smith, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, is part of The Bahamas Government Online (BGOL) initiative.

Minister Smith said the BGOL project seeks to modernize government services and the business of government using information and communications technology.

Other BGOL projects to be launched soon include, provision of online tracking of packages and registered mail, a network of public access terminals within public libraries and at the College of the Bahamas, an on-line Labour databank for employers and employees, availability of Cabinet conclusions for Permanent Secretaries, and availability of a range of government forms online for download.

Attorney General Maynard-Gibson said the new service will feature a convenient, 24/7/365 access to the Laws of The Bahamas and will be updated frequently so that information can be made available to the public as soon as possible.

Also available will be selected texts of the laws passed from April, 2002-2005, and a listing of the annual Acts passed since April, 2002.

She said an updated version of the laws up to December, 2004, will be made available online toward the end of 2006.

The Attorney General said the laws online will be of special benefit to students and the business community, and will allow them to become more aware of what the laws are and how it affects them.

Minister Smith noted that in 2000, the Laws Online project was recognized as part of the business facilitation focus which initially characterized the government’s e-commerce agenda.

He said The Bahamas Laws Online website was easily launched due to the contribution of consultants from the Canadian Government of Canada in January of this year.

The technical assistance was made available by Irosoft Company of Quebec, Canada, which has been carrying out large-scale projects for government departments as well as private companies.
