PM: Bahamas Equipped to Tackle The Future:
By TOSHEENA ROBINSON-BLAIR -
Nassau, Bahamas:

In his Independence Day address to the nation, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham yesterday urged the Bahamas to draw on all its talents, resources and cultural strength in facing internal and external challenges.

"I believe that if we as a people delve deep into our positive cultural roots, we will successfully meet and overcome the internal challenges we face," he said.

"The vast majority of Bahamians including our young people are on the right track and doing the right things and I believe the future will be safe with them. We must let them know that. We must encourage and celebrate them."

The prime minister added: "So strengthened, we will also face external challenges, [we must] craft and implement programs to deal with them and together build a better future for all our people."

Calling the country’s 35th birthday, "a significant milestone in the life of a young nation," the prime minister said the country’s independence day is being marked at a time of "considerable unease" in the global community.

"External challenges are increasing especially with regard to trade issues, environmental concerns, the supply of energy and the cost of food," he explained.

"The fall-out on our communities are several, but principally economic and social. It is times such as these we must recall our past and build upon the traditions and customs and institutions that serve as the foundation of our country. We are fortunate to have a strong foundation."

In his independence day remarks the prime minister also paid special tribute to those Bahamians who have worked over the years as diplomats, or in the field of tourism, or maritime service in the Americas, Europe and in the Far East.

According to the nation’s leader they have helped to put the Bahamas on the map by their work and achievements.

He said the service they have rendered is quiet and little recognized but no less important.

Prime Minister Ingraham further noted that in this Olympic year it’s also particularly "fitting" to recognize the "spectacular" accomplishments of Bahamian sporting greats and those who will represent the country at the Beijing Olympic Games next month.

He said regardless of the country’s Olympic team’s performance the athletes will make the country proud by competing to the best of their abilities.

The Road to Independence

In December 1972, at Marlborough House in London a delegation of elected representatives of the Bahamian people sat down with representatives of the British government to agree to terms of a new Constitution for the islands of the Bahamas.

It was the third such Constitutional Conference – the first was held in 1963 and introduced ministerial government to the country, a second conference in 1969 further extended Bahamian control over the country’s internal affairs.

However, the 1972 conference dealt with full independence matters for what was still a colony of Great Britain.

That colony, became a sovereign, independent state on July 10, 1973, and assumed full responsibility for all the nation’s affairs and relations with others in the community of nations.
