Is God really that powerful?
By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter -
Nassau, Bahamas:

Most people, whether they profess Christianity or not, understand the power of God. They understand and accept that in the past people have declared that God heals, that God can and will bestow blessings upon His people and that God is merciful. However, some declare that for them that "luck" has yet to be seen, and makes them wonder if God is really that powerful?'

New Destiny Baptist Church pastor Bishop Delton Fernander says He is.

"The Bible is filled with countless accounts of the power of God," said Fernander. "In it we can see how God calmed the sea, how He raised the dead, and how He healed and fed hundreds, but still sometimes people forget that God is still working. They forget that God is still doing those things today. So to ensure that people understand that the power of God is still working we use testifying in our services."

He says when you testify you acknowledge what God has done in your life, and it confirms that He is still working amongst his people, and that having faith can heal and change your life.

"So we use testifying so when someone sits in that pew and hears this, they will say that if God can do it for them, He can do it for me. When this happens we know that. A testimony reassures people of God's great work."

Explaining that one of the things he uses testimony for is to show that God still heals, Bishop Fernander says that for people suffering with cancer, ulcers, or even leukemia, when a testimony is given people's hope is most definitely restored.

"If someone can get up in a service and proclaim that they were sick to death, that the doctors had given up on them and that through the power of prayer and God moving in their life they are healed, that reassures somebody in the congregation who has cancer that there is hope for them. The Bible says that according to the faith that works within you, you will be healed, so that testimony shows them to hold onto their faith because if God can heal them, He can heal you too.

"Now we're talking about healing, but what about other reasons for testifying. For example someone could say that they used to be a sinner, that they had serious problems like gambling and womanizing, but yet they were able to overcome those problems through teachings and through learning about Jesus, Christ. For someone siting in the pew, that could mean a lot.

"To be honest that's my testimony," said Fernander, "but today people look at me, especially those who knew me before I became a pastor, and they can ask that if the Lord could save him, I know He can save me."

Adding that no matter how moving a testimony, there will always be someone who doesn't believe. Bishop Fernander says that no one can force someone to trust in God's power.

"I find that until God touches their hearts there will always be those, the Bible says, who believes what we do is foolishness, and we can't force our belief on people. So if there are people in our churches or those outside of our churches that don't believe in the power or the usefulness of testimony, they are entitled to that belief. But to us who find and who know that this tool works to reassure Christians, it's for us to stay focused and to keep using this instrument so we can build up the faith of our people."

Fernander says if Christians do not have this belief, how else would they know that God is still healing in the church.

"Usually, the only person who knows this is the pastor, but when we give opportunity for testimony the whole congregation knows it now, and then the Bible says we edify all of these things."

However, not all churches use testifying in their formal services, says Anglican Archbishop Drexel Gomez.

"In the Anglican church we don't use testifying in our formal liturgies mainly because its the church's tradition," he explains.

"But in some parishes during prayer meetings and local services people are encouraged to do that."

Stating that Anglican's liturgies were not developed to include such activity, the Archbishop explained that during an Anglican church service the emphasis is placed on the faith that has been received, and what has been passed on from generation to generation,

"When we affirm our faith, we are testifying to our belief in what the church has always taught. This is important and differs from testifying where most emphasis is on a personal experience that people have had, and sometimes those experiences don't speak to reality."

Gomez said that depending on the context, they have found that testifying can be helpful, but persons must remember that in the end it's what God is up to, not what they are up to, and in many instances in testifying the emphasis is on the person who is giving the testimony as opposed to what God is saying, and what the message is that God is trying to get through.

"So sometimes the testimony is not necessarily authentic," he said.
