Haiti president calls for end to deportation:
By Oscar Ramjeet -
Caribbean Net News Special Correspondent:

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: A CMC report from Miami states that Haitian President, Rene Preval has reiterated his fervent appeal to the United States president to grant temporary protected status (TPS) to Haitians living illegally in the US.

Preval's call comes at a time when the French-speaking Caribbean territory currently faces a massive task to rebuild the county after deadly storms, which killed nearly 800 people and also destroyed homes, crops and infrastructure.

Speaking at the Americas Conference in Coral Gables, Florida, Preval cautioned against a resumption of deportations because of the economic challenges faced by his government.

"This is a chance for the US administration to put in place for Haitians, the temporary protected status,” Preval said, adding that while he had already personally told US President George Bush about his deep concerns, he would additionally write him on the matter.

Two Florida Democratic Congressmen have been pushing the Bush administration to permanently cease deportation because of the hardship being experienced in the impoverished country.
