The United Nations: When clowns come matching in
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish

By Rebecca Theodore

Send in the clowns. Perma-pressed costumes, bright smiles, amusing and rosy cheeks and eyes that sparkle in the light. Let’s make a laughing stock against the sea of troubles.

Poised impossibly on the diplomatic stage of the UN, world leaders and dignitaries find comfortable tightropes. In spite of all, they preserve their dizzying balances. Uncertain on which side to fall, they evoke mirages to build a better world. All of humankind’s troubles will be resolved. The 66th session of the UN rolls on.

Rebecca Theodore was born on the north coast of the Caribbean island of Dominica and is now based in Atlanta, GA . She writes on national security and political issues and can be reached at rebethd@comcast.nettBut what should the audience believe when they see all this laughter?

Quasi dreams of peace are chronicled. A pointless exercise to end all wars slogs on. Diplomatic hypocrisy crowns their strife and bickering. Yes! They are making balloons into things.

Yet, the UN lingers on as the hope of the ages.

“Do clowns ever sigh out loud?” someone asks. “Yes they do,” another answers and this time it is the Palestinian question like none other that exposes the incapability, falsity and clown-like character of the so-called United Nations.

Destined to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people since its inception in 1945, its purpose was to stop wars between countries and to provide a platform for dialogue.

But the record shows there is no evidence to prove that the United Nations has prevented any wars. So let’s erase the magic and tell them the stories.

The United States can no longer pretend to be an honest broker in the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians’ bid to have the United Nations recognize their statehood is rejected. Obama has chosen to abdicate. His pro-Israel bloated rhetoric comes at a time when he is facing fierce criticism from Republican presidential candidates over his past treatment of Israel.

What do you expect a man to do under these circumstances?

He is now at odds with the region’s proponents of democracy. He has exposed differences with traditional European allies, but support and sympathy for Israel is a “badge of honour.” He will wear it well into the 2012 elections. He definitely will.

“So who calls the shots on US Middle East policy?” another interrupts. “It is the right wing Zionist leaders who call the shots when it comes to US Middle East policy”, another answers in disbelief.

And he continues his homily.

The UN has not been able to resolve a single major conflict. Whether it was Kashmir, Congo, Haiti, or the Korean peninsula, the UN is a total failure. The UN is an absurd debating club of elite leaders who oppress billions across the planet. The UN has been the harlot of the imperialist powers and it acts in accordance with the interests of these bosses. The UN is endorsed by 193 nations, injected with countless hours of labour and billions of dollars and still the world is filled with troubles.

And despite their collective longings and aspirations to promote peace, progress, and fraternity, wars, mass-murder, widespread poverty, and socioeconomic and political crises continue to invade upon the rights and sovereignty of nations, leaving behind irremediable damage worldwide to humanity.

Indeed! The United Nations created Israel but it is impossible to create the state of Palestine.

And so, while continuing to create illusions to their tricks, the clowns keep on laughing and hands give applause. They spread more despair than cheer, more gloom than happiness, but this is the circus where juggling and risking of lives abound.

I’ve ridden my unicycle around the ring, drenched in buckets of water. Obama, the trainer in chief is unable to crack whips above the heads of wild cats, but I am not sad for I know that, with a few pennies saved, in a year I’ll see the circus again.

Yellow hair is good indeed.
