Israel set itself on fire

By BERİL DEDEOĞLU:

Hamas broke the cease-fire, and Israel responded. Hundreds of people have died, and the human tragedy continues. Hamas directed missiles from Gaza, and Hezbullah from Lebanon, but the one who made a mistake was, indeed, Israel.

It is a reality in our day that power slides toward the disadvantaged, and the one who employs asymmetric power loses its legitimacy. Israel probably had to make a historic decision. It couldn't be said that its own internal power struggle had no impact on this decision. Nevertheless, it is understood that the historic decision is built on a general political consensus.

Israel wanted to bring an end to Hamas' hold on Gaza. Hamas is organized around religious motives and does not hesitate to resort to violence to defend people's rights, but at the same time, supports the great majority of Palestinians. In short, Israel had enough of the attacks from Gaza and of the pressures on the Abbas regime and decided to get rid of it. It must be that it planned first to raze the region, which is already deprived of food and water under the embargo, by bombs from the air before rescuing it by land. We don't know what this plan implies technically, but politically, it is an ill-fated decision.

Israel's dialogue in one way or another with the Palestinians and even with the Syrian and Lebanese governments was considered to be a hopeful development for the Muslim world as well as for other societies. Actually, many aspects of this process aligned with the "Western" struggle in Afghanistan, the US plans of withdrawal from Iraq and Obama's expectations for a new Middle East. The attack on Gaza is a candidate for changing parameters in these issues.

With this operation, Israel has become an open target for Hezbullah in Lebanon and radical organizations in Egypt, Pakistan and other places. We don't know whether they are able to fight everybody, but for the time being, they have made Jews living all over the world open targets. In short, Jews are now in a less secure position. Moreover, it should be mentioned that though it is not always true, the ones who get angry about Israel also mention the US. The US and Israel are seen in the Middle East as a package, and consequently, those who get angry at one also get angry at the other. In fact, this operation made the situation of the US more difficult. Who knows, perhaps Israel is launching the operation just to trigger this point.

The question of how Hamas and Hezbullah are provided with arms is an important one. Maybe Israel aims to bring to light the players who helped these two organizations. It could be that Israel wants the US, which is left in a troubled position against the Muslim world, to become more actively involved and create pressure to take the other players out. It will be a hard choice for Obama, but the situation will change depending on which state is targeted. Nonetheless, it could be said that the attack on Gaza will have impacts that will dissociate the US from conciliatory policies.

Israel has put both the Jews of the world and itself in a tight spot. Furthermore, there is enough experience to know that the military struggle against organizations like Hezbullah or Hamas cannot be successful. These organizations are political parties in terms of their supporters. Moreover, they have no places that could be termed military targets as they are functioning as civilian militia forces. Everyone is both a civilian and a warrior; consequently, the ones killed are primarily civilians. In the combat of the military with the civilian, civilians die but politically become winners; there are many examples of this in history. Why did Israel put its future at risk in a way that could harm its existence even more than the damage it thinks Hamas is causing? Couldn't it show in other ways that it was embarrassed?
