FATMA DİŞLİ:

Barack Hussein Obama took the oath of office as the 44th president of the United States at an impressive ceremony yesterday amid soaring hopes and great expectations for his presidency.

It is not just the United States that expects the Obama presidency to bring hope, change and rectification of the mistakes of the Bush administration, which has made life intolerable for many in the world. The fact that Obama took office only days after Israel declared a cease-fire in Gaza, after killing 1,300 Palestinians and wounding more than 5,000 others, means an immediate challenge for his administration, as it is seen as his first major test as president.

Sabah’s Erdal Şafak terms the day that Obama took his seat as president as the most important day for the US since Jan. 1, 1863, when Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery, and the most historic day for the world since Nov. 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. “Today, the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. has become real, and the first black president of the US is taking office,” says Şafak. According to Şafak, Obama, although he skipped over the Middle East problem in a recent interview to Time magazine, Obama’s first test in the White House will be the tragedy in Gaza. “His attitude toward Gaza will be a litmus test for the course of US-Israeli relations during his term,” says Şafak, noting that he is not very hopeful about Obama standing up against Israel, considering the fact that by remaining silent during the Gaza tragedy, he gave his implicit approval for the Israeli atrocities. Şafak in addition makes mention of the fact that Obama also referred to Israel as a “holy place” for himself during his election campaign. “I cannot be optimistic, but I hope I’m wrong,” states Şafak.

Hürriyet’s Cüneyt Ülsever thinks just as all other US presidents, Obama will attempt to resolve the Middle East conflict. He will make efforts to assist Palestine establish its own state, but nobody should expect him to tolerate Hamas. He also says he wants to congratulate the US public for electing a president by looking only at his human qualities.

Star’s Mehmet Altan describes Obama’s taking office as the return of a legend, a United States that makes money through selling technology and computers instead of weapons. “What kind of an America was that of Bill Clinton? It was one of computers, while Bush’s America was one of oil and weapons. He made the entire world suffer,” he explains. Altan says US spending on arms fell sharply during Clinton’s term, while the opposite happened during Bush’s term. “Today, the legend is returning, and those who are ‘pro-computer’ are taking back the administration of the United States. After an eight-year interruption, the Clinton line has come back to the White House. Peace, welfare, globalization and wealth are the things that will be focused on in the future,” suggests Altan.
